Writing
At St George’s C of E First School and Nursery, our writing curriculum reflects our school vision of 'Wonderfully made, inspired to shape the world'. We are inspired by Malala Yousafzai's powerful message that “One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world.” Our curriculum is designed to develop the skills to communicate effectively and confidently. We believe that excellent communication is key to unlocking their potential and making a positive impact on the world.
To support this, we have implemented the Literacy Counts’ Ready Steady Write curriculum. The sequences are inspired by high quality texts providing rich opportunities to develop essential spelling, punctuation, and grammar knowledge. Through these texts, our children explore a variety of genres for different audiences and purposes, and engage in planning, writing, and editing a complete written piece.
Our approach includes a range of strategies to help our children succeed, such as shared and modelled writing, group discussions, partner talk, drama, and immersive text experiences. Each lesson across all year groups also includes focused sentence accuracy work, which supports the correct use of grammar and punctuation.
Every half term, each class explores one key text, or "vehicle text," which inspires both fiction and non-fiction writing outcomes. This structure allows children to expand their writing skills in a variety of contexts, helping them become effective and confident communicators.
